Nearly 25,000 households in south-east Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms swept through the state, generating strong winds reaching over 100 km/h.

Large Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Destruction

Homeowners reported large ice chunks measuring up to seven centimeters in particular locations. Meteorological experts confirmed that multiple regions across the state had been impacted by substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were focused on reestablishing power throughout the damaged zones, with nearly 70 crews activated to handle the extensive power failures.

Victorian Weather Woes

At the same time, nearly one thousand households in the southern state also faced electricity disruptions after the capital city saw its wettest day in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams received nearly 600 requests for assistance across the region, mainly for structural issues but also for fallen timber and water accumulation.

• Hoppers Crossing area - multiple rescue reports
• Wyndham area - 179 emergency requests

During the peak on the previous day, in excess of 28,000 electricity consumers in Victoria were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along much of Queensland's east this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the coastal areas.

The following day was expected to become the wettest day, with continued thunderstorm potential anticipated across multiple regions of both areas.

Medical Alert

Medical authorities cautioned that there was an higher risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the state's northern country region, particularly given the ongoing climate situation.
