UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a young woman containing several human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
